Running back Luke Eversole rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries to lead the St. Charles football team past visiting Ready 19-7 on Sept. 13 in the first meeting between the teams since 2001.

The Cardinals improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2010, using Eversole as a workhorse in the second half when he rushed 14 times for 83 yards. In the fourth quarter, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior carried the ball on all 11 of the Cardinals’ plays from scrimmage, totaling 72 yards, before St. Charles went into victory formation with 1 minute, 40 seconds remaining.

“We preached being tough all week, and we came out and played tough,” St. Charles coach Deke Hocker said. “We were far from perfect, but we came out and did what we needed to do to win.”

The Cardinals converted two Silver Knights’ turnovers into touchdowns. Linebacker Carter Bryant recovered a fumble on the Ready 34-yard line that led to a 21-yard touchdown run by Roland Rowe with 5:06 left in the opening quarter.

Isaiah Yarngo intercepted a pass by Ready quarterback Darius Parharn on the second play of the fourth quarter to set up the Cardinals at the Silver Knights’ 43. Eight plays later, Eversole scored on an 11-yard run.

“We gave up scores off turnovers and that’s tough to overcome against a good team,” said Ready coach Joel Cutler, whose team dropped to 1-2. “(The Cardinals) executed when they needed to in the second half.”

Rowe had two carries for 22 yards and one score and caught three passes for 46 yards. As a defensive back, he had an interception.

The Silver Knights played without leading rusher Jack Foley, who sat with an unspecified injury. Parharn led Ready in rushing with 70 yards on 17 carries, including a 50-yard touchdown.
