Flashes of lightning interrupted the Olentangy Orange football team’s opening possession against host Big Walnut on Sept. 20, a drive that certainly didn’t provide any sparks with four penalties and a couple of incomplete passes.

Pioneers coach Zebb Schroeder didn’t know how his group would react to a nearly two-hour weather delay.

“They came out with a ton of juice,” Schroeder said. “I thought they were more excited at 9 o’clock than they were at 7 o’clock. … They knew this was a little bit strange with adverse conditions, and I felt like that just rallied them together.”

The Pioneers kicked their offense into gear after the delay, piling up 412 total yards in a 34-3 victory to improve to 3-1.

Quarterback Spencer Hawkins threw two touchdown passes, both to Sam Wyne, and ran for a score. Wyne finished with four receptions for 83 yards, and his 58-yard touchdown catch put Orange up 14-3 with 2 minutes, 1 second left in the first quarter.

Hawkins’ 9-yard touchdown pass to Wyne in the second quarter gave the Pioneers a 24-3 halftime lead.

“A win like this shows what we’re capable of doing,” said Hawkins, who completed 13 of 20 passes for 184 yards.

The Pioneers’ running game was even more potent, producing 228 yards. Luke Applegate rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Jake Vanchieri added 107 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Big Walnut, which dropped to 2-2, managed just 142 total yards, including only 61 in the first half.

Tyler Crotinger ran for 66 yards on 17 carries, and quarterback Jagger Barnett completed seven of 18 passes for 39 yards.
