The Grove City Christian boys soccer team entered the second half of the season looking to remain in the MSL-Cardinal Division title chase.

The Eagles, who were 4-4-1 overall before playing Hamilton Township on Sept. 23, are 3-1 in the league.

With just five programs in the league, the teams meet twice during the season, so the Eagles entered the week preparing for rematches with each opponent.

Zanesville Rosecrans was 2-0-1 in the league, Fisher Catholic was 2-1-1, Millersport was 0-2-1 and Harvest Prep was 0-3-1.

The Eagles visit Rosecrans on Saturday, Sept. 28, looking to avenge a 4-0 loss to the Bishops on Sept. 7.

"The next time we play Rosecrans, we can write our own history and have some say in the end," coach Dan Milam said.

Grove City Christian played the first meeting without defender Carter Stedtefeld and midfielder David Claffey, as both were out with knee injuries. Milam is hoping both will be available for the rematch.

"We had a couple major injuries a couple weeks ago to two of our key starters (and) captains," Milam said. "Our first game without them was Rosecrans. We're finding ourselves without them until they come back. We're trying to get some consistency. When we play again, I'm hoping to have my full squad."

Rosecrans was 15th in last week's Division III state poll.

Grove City Christian defeated Fisher Catholic 2-1 on Sept. 5 and plays host to the Irish on Saturday, Sept. 28.

"It's a good rivalry and now that we play twice, that adds fuel," Milam said. "In soccer, it's physical games versus finesse games."

Grove City Christian defeated Millersport 4-0 on Sept. 18. Zach Lauron and Seth Ortega each had two goals and an assist, Juliana Hunt had two assists and goalkeeper Bailey Garren had four saves.

Lauron had six goals and three assists through nine games, and Ortega had four goals and one assist.

"We have 16 seniors and we've all played together all of high school," Lauron said. "We have good team chemistry and we're having a lot of fun together. With good chemistry, you have a lot more fun when you play at the same time."

Boys golf team readies for postseason

The boys golf team prepared for the Division III district tournament by competing in the MSL-Cardinal postseason tournament Sept. 17 at Denison Golf Club.

The Eagles finished third (399) behind Fisher Catholic (372) and Rosecrans (388) and ahead of Millersport (417) as Brandon Von Ins led the way with an 89. Zach Lauron, who shot a 119 in the league preseason tournament, had a personal-best 99.

"We have been happy with Zach's improvement," coach Josh Ipock said.

Tim Sullivan carded a 102.

Grove City Christian finished third (3-6) in the final standings behind Fisher Catholic (9-0) and Rosecrans (6-3) and ahead of Millersport (0-9).

Because of the low number of programs with four or more golfers, sectional tournaments were not held in Division III.

The Eagles will compete at district Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Denison Golf Club. The top team and the top individual not on the qualifying team will advance to state Oct. 11 and 12 at NorthStar.

"We are still practicing and working hard, preparing for the district tournament," Ipock said.

Runners compete at Madison Christian

The boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Marion & Ruth Gray Invitational on Sept. 21 at Madison Christian. Neither had enough runners for a team score.

Dylan King led the boys, finishing fifth in 20 minutes, 16.5 seconds. Claffey was 15th (21:29.1), followed by Luke McCoy (21st, 22:39) and Michael Flowers (40th, 25:34.1).

Sydney King led the girls, finishing 15th in 30:24.9. Maddy Bliss was 17th (31:29.2), Hannah Allen was 19th (34:31.8) and Maggie Isner was 20th (39:54.9).
