A pass that looked to miss its target could be the spark needed for the Pickerington North football team to turn around its season.

Quarterback Jack Sawyer connected with wide receiver Chris Scott on a tipped fourth-down pass for a 25-yard score to give the visiting Panthers the lead for good in a 29-27 win over previously unbeaten Dublin Coffman on Sept. 27.

The pass was tipped by running back Idris Lawrence near the 15-yard line, but Scott was able to pull down the ball and race to the end zone to give North a 22-21 lead.

“Yeah, that pass was for Chris,” Sawyer said with a smile and a wink. “That’s who it was going to.”

Scott had eight catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns, but credited Lawrence with an assist on the go-ahead reception.

North improved to 2-3, while Coffman fell to 4-1.

“Idris tipped it to me, and I knew I had to get to the end zone,” Scott said. “I was at the right place at the right time.”

Sawyer was 9-for-16 passing for 170 yards and two scores and rushed for 31 yards on 11 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left. Tanner Pope added the extra point to give the Panthers a 29-21 lead.

Coffman quarterback Connor Mathews led his team downfield on the ensuing possession, connecting with Moussa Diallo on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 32 seconds left. However, the Shamrocks were unable to tie the score, as North’s defensive front smothered Diallo in the backfield on a failed two-point conversion run.

Mathews completed 15 of 20 passes for 215 yards with three touchdowns and an interception and Jameel Williamson had seven catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Shamrocks.

Mathews hit Williamson on touchdown passes of 60 and 67 yards in the third quarter to put Coffman up 21-6.

“It says a lot for our team,” North coach Nate Hillerich said. “How many 1-3 teams can go down like that so quickly in the third quarter and still come back? A lot of 1-3 teams would have wilted, but our guys never stopped.”

Lawrence finished with 88 yards on 25 carries for the Panthers, while Diallo had nine carries for 73 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown, for the Shamrocks.
