Staying patient paid off for the Harvest Prep football team Oct. 11 at Fortress Obetz during its first meeting against Ready since 2000.

The Warriors — who turned the ball over on downs three times inside Silver Knights’ territory before finally punching it in — got a pair of third-quarter touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Jaylen Jennings and another scoring run from Jennings in overtime.

During Ready’s overtime possession, Jennings sealed the victory with an interception as his team won 21-15 to improve to 6-1.

The Knights, who dropped to 3-4, forced overtime on a trick play before coming up short.

“The one thing you can never do is question our heart,” Harvest Prep coach Milan Smith said. “They competed and we need these kinds of games because we want to play for a long time. Jaylen was amazing tonight.”

Ready took a 7-0 lead on a 12-yard run by Jack Foley with 10 minutes, 34 seconds left in the first half.

Harvest Prep was forced to punt on fourth-and-29 from its own 20 with 26 seconds left in the third quarter but Ready was whistled for roughing the punter.

The Warriors then moved to the Knights’ 34 and Jennings ran for 7 yards on third-and-10, but Ready was called for a facemask to keep the drive alive.

Jennings then ran for 1 yard on fourth-and-1 from the Knights’ 4 and for a 3-yard touchdown with 8:08 remaining. He also ran for the two-point conversion to make it 8-7.

After a 63-yard touchdown run by Jennings with 5:42 remaining gave the Warriors a 15-7 lead, Ready tied it at 15 with 1:34 to go when Tyrese Hudson connected with quarterback Darius Parham on a 30-yard halfback pass. On the two-point conversion attempt, Parham dropped back to pass but scrambled and ran it in.

“We were just going to push through and make sure we were going to get the (win),” Jennings said.

Ready kicker A.J. Craddock recovered an onside kick and the Knights drove to the Harvest Prep 23 but ran out of time before getting off a field-goal attempt.

In overtime, Jennings ran for a 21-yard touchdown on third-and-11 but the two-point conversion attempt failed.

On Ready’s overtime possession, Foley ran for 10 yards on first down but the Knights lost 2 yards on each of the next two plays before Jennings’ interception sealed the victory for Harvest Prep.

“I’m real proud of the kids and I wish them well the rest of the way,” Ready coach Joel Cutler said. “We just came up on the short end of the stick.”
