First-year Upper Arlington football coach Jeremey Scally couldn’t fight back tears as he celebrated with his team following a 10-7 home win over Hilliard Davidson on Oct. 11.
Scally was an assistant at Davidson for 14 years before taking over the Golden Bears’ program earlier this year.
“I’m really happy for our kids,” Scally said. “They bought in the day I was fortunate enough to be here to get the opportunity. Our kids didn’t second guess. I will forever be grateful to (Davidson coach) Brian White and that staff.”
Quarterback Jacob Leve’s 1-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave UA a 10-7 advantage, a lead it would not relinquish.
Carson Gresock did most of the damage on the 79-yard scoring drive, and finished with 83 yards on 14 carries to lead the Golden Bears.
UA improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the OCC-Central Division, while Davidson fell to 4-3 and 1-1.
The Wildcats, who now lead the series 19-6, had won 12 consecutive games in the rivalry.
UA's Zac Yoakam made a 30-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining in the second quarter to account for the first half’s only points.
Davidson, which was limited to 41 yards in the first half, had its most productive drive of the game to begin the second half, with Johnny Weir scoring on a 38-yard run to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead with 9:56 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats had a final chance to reclaim the lead in the fourth quarter with possession near midfield, but Weir couldn’t handle a pitch from quarterback Evan Tekancic as UA’s Michael Ballenger recovered the fumble with 3:50 remaining.
Weir led the Wildcats with 52 yards rushing on 11 carries.
“Field position killed us all night and it was our fault because we didn’t flip the field,” White said. “I said special teams were going to be huge tonight and they proved to be pretty big. Their kickoff team did a really good job, their punt team did a really good job. We were pinned deep and didn’t do anything about it for most of the night.”
