The Central Crossing football team continued its domination of rival Westland by rallying to defeat the host Cougars 17-13 in an OCC-Central Division contest Oct. 17.

The Comets, who are now 11-0 all-time against Westland, trailed 13-10 late in the game until Anthony Lowe scored on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Logan Green with 54 seconds remaining.

The Comets improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the OCC-Central, while Westland fell to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the league.

The Cougars erased a 10-0 halftime deficit by scoring 13 unanswered points, capped by Peterson Iresne’s 18-yard touchdown run with 4:29 left in the game, only to watch Green guide Central Crossing on a game-winning drive.

Kyren Glaze led the Comets with 98 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 carries and added an interception on defense.

“We told our guys all week that both teams have faced some challenges and both teams are going to play their hearts out,” Central Crossing coach Trevor White said. “That Westland team fought to the very end. Somehow we were able to pull that one out.”

Central Crossing took advantage of a turnover on the opening kickoff to open the scoring early in the first quarter.

Max Webb forced a fumble, with Jahaan Upchurch recovering the loose ball. Three plays later, Glaze scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Comets a 7-0 lead with 10:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Tyler Terrell’s 37-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the first half extended the Comets’ lead to 10-0.

Westland moved into Central Crossing territory three times in the first half, but couldn’t capitalize.

Quarterback Kyle Bowles’ 8-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter pulled the Cougars within 10-6.

Bowles rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an injury, while Iresne rushed for 105 yards and a score on 28 carries.

“Not good enough,” Westland coach Rick Rios said. “We thought we controlled the whole first half and had zero points to show for it. That’s not good enough. We didn’t make plays when he had to.”
