The two-time defending state champion Dublin Jerome boys golf team finds itself in position to win another Division I title.

The Celtics are in first place heading into the second round of the 12-team state tournament Oct. 19 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course after shooting a 309 in the first round Oct. 18.

Jerome holds a one-stroke lead on second-place Akron Hoban (310). Liberty Township Lakota East (314) is third, while Olentangy Liberty and Cincinnati Moeller both shot a 317 and are tied for fourth.

“I’m very proud of my guys for the way they battled today,” Celtics coach Taylor Harle said. “Our goal was to put ourselves in contention to have a shot at winning tomorrow, and we did that.”

Jerome’s Tyler Groomes carded a 70 in the opening round to tie for second with Uniontown Lake’s Alex Anderson and Hoban’s Solomon Petrie behind Green’s Maxwell Moldovan (69).

Liberty’s Hunter Corbin and Westerville Central’s Josh Qian, who is competing as an individual, both shot a 76 and are tied for eighth.

The other area individual is Pickerington North’s Carson Bellish, who carded an 80 and is tied for 25th.

Also for Jerome, Ethan Snyder and Jake Yarbrough both shot 79, Ryan Norkin shot an 81 and Logan Menning carded an 83.

Grant Smeltzer posted Liberty’s second-best score, a 78, followed by Andrew Blosser (81), Jack O’Donnell (82) and Ben Armbruster (90).
