Behind a big game from running back Quintell Quinn, the DeSales football team stayed perfect in the CCL at 2-0 and improved to 7-1 overall with a 26-14 victory over host St. Charles on Oct. 18.

Quinn ran for 247 yards on 26 carries, and his 69-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter put the Stallions ahead for good.

The Cardinals fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the CCL with their third consecutive loss.

DeSales took the lead midway through the first quarter when quarterback Reno Godfrey teamed up with Quinn for a 22-yard scoring pass.

The Stallions then made it 14-0 with a 19-yard scoring run on a reverse by receiver Owen Faulkner with 2:19 left in the first quarter.

Although St. Charles forced two early turnovers, it failed to turn either one into points. The Cardinals fumbled one play after an interception at their own 33-yard line with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter, and later were stopped on fourth-and-3 after recovering a fumble at the DeSales 35.

“Missed opportunities,” St. Charles coach Deke Hocker. “In a game like this, you have to take advantage of everything you can, and they just did that more than us tonight.”

The Cardinals mounted a second-half comeback with a pair of touchdowns. The first came when receiver Joseph Umba hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal from quarterback Andy Mason with 6:09 left in the third quarter. Running back Luke Eversole, who had 149 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 attempts, then broke free for a 46-yard score with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter to even the score at 14.

The Stallions answered with Quinn’s 69-yard run to regain the lead, however, and Godfrey scored on a 10-yard run for the final points.

Godfrey finished 7-for-9 passing for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
