MASON — Of the 15 area girls tennis players competing in the state tournament in either Division I or II, 10 will play on the second day Oct. 19 at Lindner Family Tennis Center.

In Division I doubles, three central Ohio teams went 2-0 on the opening day of state Oct. 18 to advance to semifinals.

Dublin Jerome juniors Arya Dudipala and Lalasa Nagireddy will face Olentangy Orange seniors Kortney Reed and Erin Storrer in one semifinal, and Jerome seniors Reagan Resor and Katherine Wang will play Mason’s Annie Kruse and Raina Chada in the other.

In Division I singles, Pickerington North senior Cassie Alcala beat Rocky River Magnificat’s Olivia Rondini 6-3, 6-2 and Canfield’s Anna Kan 6-1, 7-5 to reach a semifinal.

“I was a little nervous since it’s my last year, but overall, I played really well,” said Alcala, a four-time state qualifier.

In Division II singles, Columbus Academy junior Sydni Ratliff, the state runner-up each of the past two seasons, opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Toledo Central Catholic’s Ava McQuillin and defeated Pepper Pike Orange’s Blessing Nwaozuzu 6-2, 7-5 to reach a semifinal.

“I was down 5-3 and 40-15 (in the second set), so that was two set points (I saved),” Ratliff said. “I made two really good shots on both of those points and then I started making more balls in play.”

In Division II doubles, sophomore Alexis Burkhalter and freshman Katie Zerbi of Wellington defeated Cincinnati Wyoming’s Peyton Osha and Sydney Evans 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 and Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown’s Ally Mills and Alex Wolf 6-3, 6-4 to reach a semifinal.

Also in Division I, Upper Arlington’s Ella Hazelbaker and Wendy Shi lost in a quarterfinal in doubles, Olentangy Liberty’s Maddie Atway and Dani Schoenly each lost in a quarterfinal in singles and Olentangy’s Nour Khayat lost in the first round in singles.
