The Hilliard Davidson football team was looking for consistency in its offense and found just that against an old rival.
The Wildcats, who had the ball almost 10 minutes longer than visiting Dublin Coffman, took the lead using a 17-play, 80-yard drive that took 9:52 off the clock in a 15-14 win over the Shamrocks on Oct. 18 in OCC-Central Division play.
Davidson improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the OCC-Central, while Coffman dropped to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the league.
“This was huge because we haven’t been executing the way we’ve wanted to all year, even when we would win games,” said Wildcats running back Jonathan Weir, who rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries and had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. “We’ve been talking about having more consistency and being consistent all over the field.”
Coffman scored on a 1-yard run by Bryon Threats to take a 14-9 lead with 3:08 left in the third quarter. Threats finished with 201 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.
The Wildcats then began their clock-consuming possession, which quarterback Evan Tekancic kept alive with a 6-yard run to the Coffman 34 on fourth-and-4. He ended the drive with its longest play — a 12-yard touchdown run.
“We came out and did what we needed to do,” Weir said. “We came out and were physical and ate up the clock.”
Coffman drove to the Davidson 32, but a pass by quarterback Connor Mathews was tipped twice before being picked off by Nick Dymek at the 25. The defensive back returned the interception to the Shamrocks’ 22 with 2:50 left in the game.
“I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time,” Dymek said. “I was reading the quarterback’s eyes and was able to get to the ball.”
Tekancic attempted one pass, a 52-yard completion to Weir, and R.J Gonzales rushed for 97 yards. Sean Carrier added a 42-yard field goal.
For Coffman, Mathews finished 7-for-10 passing for 48 yards with the interception. Moussa Diallo added 22 yards rushing on six carries, and Sean Moriarty had three catches for 21 yards.
