The Olentangy Berlin football team remained in the Division II, Region 7 playoff chase and kept its OCC-Cardinal Division title hopes alive with a 32-29 win at Dublin Scioto on Oct. 18.

The Bears, who were ninth in the region entering the game, improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the league, while the Irish, who were eighth in the region, slipped to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

The top eight teams in the region qualify for the playoffs.

Scioto led 8-6 at halftime, but the teams combined for 47 points in the second half, with the Bears pulling out the win on quarterback Jacob Moeller’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Corey Hill with 16 seconds remaining.

Scioto had taken a 29-25 lead on quarterback Chad Ray’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Lopes with 43 seconds left.

Johnny Spinner helped to lead the Bears, rushing for 231 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries, while Moeller completed 17 of 28 passes for 236 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Assistant coach Mark Rose served as head coach for Berlin in place of Mark Nori, who was suspended for one game as the result of two unsportsmanlike penalties during the Bears’ 21-19 loss to Hilliard Bradley on Oct. 11.

“It was a very up and down game,” Rose said. “Our kids showed a lot of discipline, a lot of heart. Both teams fought really hard. It was a crazy week. We tried to make it as seamless as possible.”

Pete Hrelec rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries to lead the Irish.

Scioto scored its only points of the first half when Marty Neuhardt intercepted a Moeller pass and returned it 54 yards for a score on the game’s first possession. Neuhardt then ran for the two-point conversion to give the Irish an 8-0 lead.

Led by Spinner, Berlin had success moving the ball in the first half, but could only manage two field goals (36 and 27 yards) by Jacob Lewis.

“They had the ball last and we needed to get a stop,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “They hit that big pass down the middle. We got a hand on that (touchdown) ball. We were close to getting that ball out of there and (Hill) makes a great play.”
