Jalan January powered the Hartley football team to a 35-13 victory over Granville in a Division III, Region 11 semifinal Nov. 15 at Watkins Memorial, rushing for a personal-best 407 yards and three touchdowns.
The senior scored on runs of 3, 31 and 28 yards, accounting for most of the Hawks’ 463 yards on the ground.
“It was a great milestone for me, but I couldn’t do anything without my offensive line,” January said. “Hats off to them. They’re the best guys in the world. I appreciate our coaching staff just putting me into position where I could do what I do best.”
Top-seeded Hartley, which improved to 11-1, will play second-seeded Jonathan Alder for the regional title at a neutral site on Nov. 22.
Coach Brad Burchfield also watched his defense keep Granville’s productive offensive in check.
The fourth-seeded Blue Aces came into the game averaging 32 points but were held to 87 total yards and no points in the first half. They finished with 212 total yards as they closed the season at 10-2.
“I thought it was just a great win and we got better,” Burchfield said. “I thought we matched up pretty well with them. What they wanted to do was stuff that we’re good at defending, so I think that kind of helped.”
Hartley led 14-0 at halftime following a drive that went 99 yards in 15 plays and ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Miles Fleming to Marcelis Parker.
Both of January’s long touchdown runs, 31 and 28 yards, came in the fourth quarter.
Granville running back Doak Buttermore scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards in the second half. He finished with 43 yards on 15 carries.
Quarterback Dominic Varrasso ran for 65 yards on 11 carries and completed seven of 16 passes for 51 yards for the Blue Aces.
