The Dublin Jerome football team saw its season end with a 37-14 loss to top-seeded Springfield in a Division I, Region 2 semifinal Nov. 15 at Marysville.
The fourth-seeded Celtics finished 9-3, while the Wildcats improved to 11-1 and advanced to play third-seeded Dublin Coffman in a regional final Nov. 22 at a neutral site.
“They’re good,” Jerome coach Bob Gecewich said. “We wasted some mistakes. We had opportunities and we wasted them. They’re good and athletic, they play hard, they fly to the football. They’re everything we knew. They’re a one seed and you burn opportunities against a one seed, you’re not going to win.”
The Celtics had a pair of chances to open the scoring as Sammy Stoner recovered a fumble on the game’s first play and then returned an interception into Springfield territory later in the first quarter, but Jerome couldn’t capitalize on either chance.
The Wildcats got their potent ground game untracked on their third possession as Jeff Tolliver capped a 71-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Springfield added to its lead when quarterback Te’Sean Smoot scored on a 14-yard run to make it 13-0 with 5:41 left in the first half.
The Celtics pulled within 13-7 when quarterback Ryan Miller connected with Stoner on a 78-yard touchdown pass with 9:03 left in third quarter, but the Wildcats made it 20-7 with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Smoot to James Wood II.
Springfield increased its lead to 27-7 on Jerome’s next possession as TyAren Brown intercepted Miller and returned the ball 24 yards for a score.
Tolliver led the Wildcats’ offense, rushing for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
