A long touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter gave the Harvest Prep football team the break it was looking for against Lucas in a Division VII state semifinal Nov. 30 at DeSales.

However, the Cubs answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 15-12 victory and kept the Warriors from reaching the title game for the first time.

Lucas quarterback Logan Niswander found Riley Mounts in the back of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal with 54 seconds left and Ethan Sauder ran for the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.

The Cubs improved to 12-2 and will play for their first title Dec. 7 against Maria Stein Marion Local at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

Harvest Prep, which lost in a state semifinal for the second time, finished 12-2.

“We left some stuff on the field, but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes,” Warriors coach Milan Smith said. “You’ve got to win the ballgame and it’s played in four quarters.”

Harvest Prep took a 12-7 lead with 7:35 left when quarterback Josiah Carroll hit Rashaun Goines over the middle and Goines sprinted for a 76-yard touchdown. The Warriors’ two-point run attempt failed.

On the ensuing possession, Niswander ran for 45 yards on third-and-3 from the Cubs’ 49. After Harvest Prep stopped Lucas for negative yardage on three consecutive plays, Niswander hit Mounts for the winning touchdown.

“We kept fighting back,” Carroll said. “We just came up a little short.”

The game was scoreless at halftime as Harvest Prep was limited to 37 yards of offense and had seven penalties for 55 yards.

The Warriors got to the Lucas 21 midway through the first quarter but were whistled for four penalties and forced to punt. They also missed a field-goal attempt with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

On the second play of Lucas’ ensuing drive, Sauder ran for a 75-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

Harvest Prep responded with its first scoring drive, capped by a 5-yard run by Javon Eggert with 2:05 left in the third quarter. The Warriors’ two-point run attempt failed as Lucas led 7-6. That score was set up by a 36-yard pass from Carroll to Eddie Temple three plays earlier.
