Coach Shan Trusley likes the mix of experience and youth on his Westerville North boys basketball team.

The Warriors return four players who started last season, when North finished 13-11 overall and 3-7 in the OCC-Buckeye Division.

"We have some veteran leadership with six kids in our senior class, and we return four kids who started at one point or another for us last year," said Trusley, who is in his seventh season. "We have experience and youth. We have some younger kids and some older kids that have not played lot of varsity basketball."

Charles Perkins, a 6-foot-4 senior post player, averaged 10.9 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds last season and was named special mention all-league, while 6-3 junior guard/forward Camden Ledford averaged 6.4 points and 4.6 rebounds and was honorable mention all-league.

Chace Perkins, a 6-1 senior guard/forward, averaged 5.6 points and 5-11 sophomore guard Noah Lawrence averaged 6.2 points.

"We had two good leaders (in 2019 graduates Philip Alston and Jeremiah Keene) last year, and I learned a lot from them," Charles Perkins said. "Now I have to step up and be a leader of this team."

Joining the Perkins brothers in the senior class are Cam'Ron Edwards (5-11, guard), Dalton John (6-3, guard/forward), Bailey Lawrence (6-0, guard/forward) and Chino Rajkoummale (6-0, guard/forward).

"I think we need to work on pulling our focus together and get ready for the season," Bailey Lawrence said. "We need to build that bond as a team."

Juniors Collin Cook (6-6, post player) and Javen McNeil (5-9, guard), sophomore Caleb Iheukwu (6-3, guard/forward) and freshmen Semaj Council (6-1, guard) and Carter Reese (6-0, guard) round out the roster.

"We have four kids that have played a lot and others getting their first taste in their role of being a varsity basketball player," Trusley said. "We also have a couple of freshmen in Semaj and Carter, who are going to be good basketball players, but they're only 14 years old so there is a steep learning curve."

The Warriors opened with a 63-43 loss to visiting Gahanna on Nov. 27. Charles Perkins had 16 points and Chace Perkins scored eight.

"I love their coachability and the fact that we have made strides from practice to practice and scrimmage to scrimmage," said Trusley, whose team begins league play Friday, Dec. 6, at Westerville Central. "They are getting better every day and they are learning a lot."

Bowling program not fielding girls team

The bowling program is not fielding a girls team this season because of low numbers.

Instead, junior Sophia Soisson and freshman Marvet Hejazin will compete on the boys squad.

Soisson and senior Ethan Moore are the only bowlers in the program who competed last season.

"It's a learning process and you have to be patient," second-year coach Eric Hagemann said. "They don't know what they don't know. I want to be with bowlers who want to have fun and learn the sport."

Soisson competed in the Division I district tournament last season along with the girls squad, which finished eighth of 16 teams. Soisson rolled a 451 three-game series to finish 53rd of 104 bowlers. She averaged a team-high 177.6 pins a year ago.

Moore had a 116.0 average for the boys team, which finished 3-8 overall.

Junior Bryce Byington and Brandon Trinh, sophomore Pasha Krantz and freshmen Ronan LaRoche, Owen Ptak, Josh Rowell, Cameron Wages, Connor Wilson and Cole Wright round out the roster.

"They are learning how to hold the ball, the way to walk (to the line) and where to throw the ball," said Hagemann, whose team is holding its home matches at Sequoia Pro Bowl. "They are at the stage of learning just how to throw the ball.

"A lot of them still don't have a bowling ball. Sophia has several, so they will borrow one of her balls. It's a work in progress."

The Warriors opened Dec. 3 against Westerville Central and competed against Olentangy Orange on Dec. 4.
