Olentangy Berlin boys basketball coach Donovon Barrett has a young team that got a boost at the right time.
The Bears picked up their first win of the season Jan. 4 with a 44-42 victory at Watkins Memorial, and were 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the OCC-Cardinal Division before playing Worthington Kilbourne on Jan. 7.
"All year we have been competitive even against really good teams into the third, fourth quarter," Barrett said. "We have been playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores this season. We're growing, and those freshmen and sophomores are getting experience."
Against Watkins Memorial, senior guard Grant Schrieber had 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and sophomore guard Adrian Stone added eight points.
Through seven games, junior guard Austin Corley was averaging a team-high 12.7 points, freshman forward Jason Inbody was averaging 6.3 points and a team-high 4.9 rebounds and Schrieber was averaging 6.1 points.
"Jason Inbody and Adrian Stone have put in some good minutes for us, especially when we played Bexley with Austin out with the flu," Barrett said, referring to a 47-43 loss to the Lions on Dec. 30. "We gave a lot of different reps to a lot of different people with our leading scorer out. We did some good things and our inexperience showed at times, but I was happy with our effort."
Inbody and Stone both had 12 points against Bexley and Schrieber scored 10.
Corley returned to the lineup Jan. 3, scoring 10 points in a 67-29 loss to Thomas Worthington in a league contest.
"We have lost a couple of kids to injury when Abel Abenet had a broken hand and Bryce Reed has missed a few games with a separated shoulder," Barrett said. "We're growing and we have a lot of freshmen and sophomores out there, but we're getting there."
Hockey team maintains winning streak
The hockey team has won seven consecutive contests, including the championship in the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders Tournament held Dec. 20-22 at Kent State.
In the tournament at Kent State, the Bears defeated Watterson 5-1 on Dec. 20 and beat Hudson Western Reserve 2-1 and Roosevelt 5-1 on Dec. 21. They played Roosevelt again in the championship game, winning 5-0 on Dec. 22.
"We only gave up three goals in four games, so we played great defense all the way around," said coach Tim Pennington, whose team is 13-3 overall and 5-3 in the CHC-White Division. "Our goalie, Josh Chmielewski, just did an outstanding job."
Andrew Rogers had five goals and one assist in the tournament to lead Berlin. Tyler Ebare (3 goals, 5 assists) and Carson Jankowski (3 goals, 4 assists) also had strong performances, while Dan Neverov and Nick Piccioni had three assists apiece.
Crumb wins title at Orange tourney
Maia Crumb of the girls wrestling team won the 150-pound championship representing the Bears in the 24-team Pioneer Classic on Jan. 4 at Orange.
The junior pinned Rocky River Lutheran West's Alayna Lopez in 1 minute, 26 seconds in the final. She scored all of her team's 24 points as Berlin placed 13th behind champion Casstown Miami East (141).
The boys team finished seventh (106) of 21 teams in the Kevin Cleveland Memorial Tournament on Jan. 4 at Dublin Scioto, behind champion Oregon Clay (248).
Evan Butcher (106) and Corey Hill (160) both placed second, Israel Foston (152) and Kody Goffin (126) both placed third, Matt Kirsop (220) placed fifth and Daniel Helmers (138) was seventh.
