Gahanna Lincoln boys basketball coach Tony Staib was recognized for a career achievement before his team’s 67-52 home victory over Olentangy Liberty on Jan. 7.
With the Lions’ 55-44 victory Dec. 31 at Whitehall, Staib earned his 300th win in 18 seasons with the program.
Staib now has 304 wins with Gahanna and 336 for a coaching career that also includes a three-year stint at Kenton.
The Lions are 12-0 this season.
“(We’ve) averaged 17 wins a season over our tenure (at Gahanna), which is pretty cool,” Staib said. “We’ve had a lot of good players.”
Before Staib took over as coach, the Lions hadn’t posted 12 wins in a season since 1993-94.
The biggest moment in Staib’s tenure took place in 2010 when Gahanna beat defending Division I state champion Northland 71-45 in a regional final to reach state for the first time.
That also marked the first season in which the program won a district title, and it followed with district championships in 2011, 2013 and 2016.
