Danielle Roe has remained patient this season while her Olentangy Orange girls basketball team has experienced growing pains.

The first-year coach inherited a program that entered the season with no varsity experience. With a lineup comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores, the Pioneers were 1-11 overall before playing Grove City on Jan. 14.

"We have zero varsity experience on the floor at all times," Roe said. "When you have zero points and zero varsity experience back, then you take what you can get early.

"We don't look at wins and losses, we look at where we are collectively as a group. One thing I know is that after 12 games, we're 100 percent healthy. I know most teams aren't fortunate enough to have a healthy roster right now.

"We'll win some and we'll lose some, but as long as we're healthy, we get another fighting chance in the next game."

The Pioneers dropped to 1-5 in the OCC-Buckeye Division with a 59-35 loss to Westerville North on Jan. 10. Freshman guard Kayla Delmore and junior post player London Davis both had eight points.

Orange committed 17 turnovers in the first half but was 10-for-24 from the field and trailed just 27-21 at halftime.

"We had a lot of unforced errors early, but we were shooting 42 percent in the first half, which did us a favor," Roe said. "We kept ourselves in there by knocking down some shots.

"From (Nos.) 1 through 5, (the Warriors) are all-around good and they are experienced. When you have senior guards going up against freshman guards, you know it's a tale of maturity when the game is on the line and in execution."

Then came the third quarter, which has plagued the Pioneers throughout the season.

"The biggest thing we have to work on is our mental toughness," Roe said. "Our third quarters have been our Achilles' heel all year, and we had 16 turnovers (against North in the third). We have to fight through these third quarters and give ourselves a fighting chance in the fourth. If we do that, we'll turn that corner. We have to win it quarter by quarter."
