Danielle Roe has remained patient this season while her Olentangy Orange girls basketball team has experienced growing pains.

The first-year coach inherited a program that entered the season with no varsity experience. With a lineup comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores, the Pioneers were 1-11 overall before playing Grove City on Jan. 14.

"We have zero varsity experience on the floor at all times," Roe said. "When you have zero points and zero varsity experience back, then you take what you can get early.

"We don't look at wins and losses, we look at where we are collectively as a group. One thing I know is that after 12 games, we're 100 percent healthy. I know most teams aren't fortunate enough to have a healthy roster right now.

"We'll win some and we'll lose some, but as long as we're healthy, we get another fighting chance in the next game."

The Pioneers dropped to 1-5 in the OCC-Buckeye Division with a 59-35 loss to Westerville North on Jan. 10. Freshman guard Kayla Delmore and junior post player London Davis both had eight points.

Orange committed 17 turnovers in the first half but was 10-for-24 from the field and trailed just 27-21 at halftime.

"We had a lot of unforced errors early, but we were shooting 42 percent in the first half, which did us a favor," Roe said. "We kept ourselves in there by knocking down some shots.

"From (Nos.) 1 through 5, (the Warriors) are all-around good and they are experienced. When you have senior guards going up against freshman guards, you know it's a tale of maturity when the game is on the line and in execution."

Then came the third quarter, which has plagued the Pioneers throughout the season.

"The biggest thing we have to work on is our mental toughness," Roe said. "Our third quarters have been our Achilles' heel all year, and we had 16 turnovers (against North in the third). We have to fight through these third quarters and give ourselves a fighting chance in the fourth. If we do that, we'll turn that corner. We have to win it quarter by quarter."

Weidenhamer swims at Northeast Classic

Graham Weidenhamer of the boys swimming and diving team finished 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, .97 second in the Northeast Classic on Jan. 11 at Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Other members of the boys and girls teams competed that same day in the 17-team Central Ohio Splash Invitational at Thomas Worthington. The boys finished ninth (174 points) behind champion Dublin Scioto (256), while the girls also were ninth (108) behind champion Westerville Central (356).

Ben Reusser led the boys by placing third in the 100 freestyle (55.74) and joining Tavo De La Rosa, Samuel Evers and Connor Huckeby on the fifth-place 400 free relay (3:49.63), while Lauren Muffley (200 free, 2:17.18) and Monica Paredes (200 individual medley, 2:35.16) both placed fifth to lead the girls.

Hockey team to hold Pioneer Classic

The tournament includes 16 varsity teams in two divisions and eight junior varsity teams. Orange, Berlin and Olentangy will be among the varsity teams, while Orange and Olentangy also will be represented in the j.v. competition.

The Pioneers have won five of their last six games and are 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the CHC-White Division after defeating Cincinnati Moeller 2-1 on Jan. 12. Luke Clifford and Nathan Hazel each scored against the Crusaders.
