Westerville South bowling coach Jamie West uses the Central District Preview Tournament to gauge his teams' progress as the postseason approaches.

South played host to the 12th annual event Jan. 18 at Columbus Square Bowling Palace, with the Jonathan Alder boys and Olentangy girls winning titles.

All proceeds benefit the Westerville South Bowling Club.

"(Former South boys coach) Mike Craig and I put this together 12 years ago as a fundraiser for Westerville South (bowling) and also as a way to get teams ready for the postseason," West said. "We've gone with a longer format of bowling. The teams seem to like it."

The South girls finished fifth (3,272) of 20 teams in pool play to advance to the eight-team championship bracket. The Wildcats then lost to Olentangy 3-1 in the first round of a best-of-five Baker games format.

Olentangy went on to defeat Jonathan Alder 3-0 in the final.

Taylor Hughes led South in pool play, finishing 12th with a 527 series, ahead of Brenda Diaz (13th, 520) and Alexzandria Stewart (16th, 498).

"We always seem to do well in this tournament, so it's always something that we look forward to," Hughes said.

The South boys finished 13th (3,568) in pool play and did not advance to championship play.

Ethan Gary led the Wildcats by finishing 23rd with a 588 series, followed by Dominic Candella (46th, 539) and Jacob Spiegel (65th, 471).

Jonathan Alder defeated Marysville 3-1 in the final.

The girls team was 3-2 overall and in the COHSBC-A Division before playing Westerville Central on Jan. 21. The Warhawks entered the week first in the league at 9-0.

South also was 1-1 in the OCC-Buckeye before playing Central. The Warhawks were first at 5-0.

"We're starting to get a little bit better," West said. "We'd still like to see more consistency, but we're getting better as the season goes on. We're still learning."

The boys team was 5-1 overall and in the COHSBC-A before playing Central. Entering the week, Central was 9-1 in the league and Olentangy Orange was 8-1.
