Shalea Byrd got all the points she wanted — and needed — Jan. 24 for the Canal Winchester girls basketball team in an OCC-Capital Division game at Groveport.

Byrd, a senior forward, scored her 1,000th career point on a layup with about 5 minutes, 30 seconds left in a 57-32 win over the Cruisers. She needed 21 points coming into the game to reach that mark, and did not score again after her landmark basket.

“It was a layup off of a rebound from my own shot,” Byrd said. “It was a pretty physical play. A shot went up, I got an offensive rebound and I tried to put it back up, then I put it back up again to score that point. It was an amazing atmosphere to be in. I’m so thankful to everybody on my team and all my coaches for helping get me here.”

Byrd is a Rio Grande volleyball recruit.

Natalie Rarick added 10 points against Groveport for the Indians, who are 12-5 overall and 4-4 in the league and won their second game in as many nights. Byrd had 18 points Jan. 23 in a 75-49 win at Eastmoor Academy.
