The Hilliard Davidson boys basketball program will honor its 1999-2000 team on Saturday, Feb. 8, during halftime of its home game against Bradley.

In the 1999-2000 season, the Wildcats went 22-5 and reached a Division I state semifinal for the only time in program history before losing to eventual champion Cincinnati St. Xavier 58-42. St. Xavier went on to defeat Bedford 63-54 in the title game.

Davidson, which was seeded fifth in the district tournament, defeated Westerville North 56-49 in a district final before beating Logan 51-37 in a regional semifinal and Canton McKinley 77-59 in the regional final to reach state.

"We were a suburban school and people weren't expecting us to do this," said Steve De Dent, who coached the Wildcats that season and now coaches the Bradley girls team. "We were the fifth seed. The only person who voted us as the No. 1 seed in the district tournament was (coach) Ed Calo from Westerville South."

De Dent said he expects most of the 13 players on the 1999-2000 roster to be in attendance, along with the four members of the coaching staff from that season.

"I remember their ability to play together," De Dent said. "It was really a team that didn't care about who scored, who did what, just do your job. That's it. We played 10 kids and we did not have a double-digit scorer. We had 10 guys who averaged between 9.8 and 6.6 (points). You love balance. It was the nicest thing. They all decided that winning was more important. We didn't have any egos."
