Coach Nick Rose has a talented young roster in his second season leading the Grandview Heights girls volleyball team.

The Bobcats have more freshmen (8) than the other three classes combined (7) as they try to improve on last year's finish of 12-11 overall and 4-8 in the MSL-Ohio Division.

"My team is young but talented," Rose said. "I have two all-district players back as starters and I have a group of freshmen that is very good. I have never had a freshman class this good before. I think I have eight freshmen who could play varsity this year."

The two all-district performers are senior outside hitter Hannah Yochem (first-team all-district and all-league) and junior setter Taylor Sanzo (honorable mention all-district, second-team all-league). Yochem led the Bobcats with 268 kills last season and had 161 digs and 39 aces, and Sanzo had team highs in assists (598) and aces (76) and added 120 digs.

"Hannah really has found a love for volleyball, and it's been amazing to watch her play," Rose said. "This is Taylor's third year on varsity, and she has just learned how to be a leader. She can coach on the court quicker than I can say anything. She lets them know what I'm going to say before I say it."

The only other senior is middle blocker Rachel Hartman, a basketball player in her first year with the program.

Also in the lineup are sophomore middle hitter Chai Dobbs-Euans and junior outside hitter Samantha Schaefer. Freshman Kendall Longbrake is the opposite hitter, and junior Olivia Leggans is the libero.

"We're a super-young team, and we had to work hard to get the freshmen more comfortable," Yochem said. "We only have three or four varsity players coming back, but it's actually going well."

Junior Olivia Schweinhagen (outside hitter) and freshmen Addi Henn (defensive spec-ialist/libero), Freya Lauer (defensive specialist/libero), Taryn Lynaugh (defensive specialist/libero), Lainey Mott (outside hitter), Kelsey Orr (setter/defensive specialist), Olivia Sanzo (defensive specialist/libero) and Megan Urig (setter/defensive specialist) complete the roster.

The Bobcats opened Aug. 22 by defeating Grove City Christian 25-22, 25-13, 25-19, and they lost to Berne Union 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 on Aug. 26. They opened league play Sept. 1 against Columbus Academy.
