Whitehall: Woman shoots husband's ear in apparent mishap
Whitehall police arrested a 62-year-old Columbus woman for negligent assault and using weapons while intoxicated, both misdemeanors, after she apparently shot a man by accident inside a residence on the 1000 block of Westphal Avenue.
At 10:30 p.m. July 14, security officers at Mount Carmel East Hospital called police to report the woman had brought her husband to the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the ear.
Whitehall reports said Columbus police already had taped off the woman's vehicle at the entrance to the emergency room. The woman told Whitehall police she accidentally had shot her husband.
She told police she found the gun in the center console of a couch. While pointing the gun at the floor, she carried it to an upstairs bedroom, where it accidentally discharged and struck the man, reports said.
The woman, whom police said had the scent of alcohol on her breath, told officers she had consumed two shots and a glass of vodka.
The man told police he was outside the residence when he was "hit," but became increasingly uncooperative as police questioned him, report said.
Police found a handgun at the residence, as well as a plastic baggie of .38-caliber cartridges and an empty bottle of vodka, reports said.
