President Richard M. Nixon traveled across the country campaigning for Republican candidates during the 1970 midterm election. Nixon, whose father had lived in Columbus and was a streetcar driver, is shown with his wife, Pat, at a rally Oct. 19 for Robert Cloud, a candidate for governor, and Robert Taft Jr., a candidate for U.S. Senate. The rally attracted a crowd estimated at 40,000. After his speech, Nixon made a surprise visit to the Ohio State University campus.
