The Taste of Bexley, an annual showcase for local restaurants, is taking on a new form this year because of statewide COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions.

Rather than being one event taking place in one location on a single day, this year's Taste of Bexley will take place via carryout services Oct. 12 to 18.

The Taste of Bexley usually is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce, but this year's proceeds will go to the participating restaurants to help offset the effects of the pandemic, said Elaine Pelz, the chamber's executive vice president.

"What we're doing is it's really going to be a restaurant week of sorts," she said. "It's not about us this year. It's all about all the restaurants."

Throughout the week, restaurants will offer special menu items and discounts to those who mention Taste of Bexley at checkout, whether online in the comments section or via telephone.

For example, Brassica, 2212 E. Main St., will include a free cookie with every meal order that week.

"For us, it's about being part of the community," said Tom Sheehan, Brassica's senior manager partner. "The community has been so supportive during this pandemic. We were fortunate to never close our doors. We were able to convert to curbside pickup. Once our dining room opened up May 21, community members were coming in and still continuing to order. We want to be part of the fabric of the community."

Throughout the Taste of Bexley, the chamber also will also raise money for the Developmental Assets Resource Network, a Bexley-based nonprofit that raises money and gathers community resources for children and families in need. The chamber will donate $1 to DARN for every "selfie" that restaurant visitors take in front of a participating business with the hashtag #TOB2020, Pelz said.

More than 22 participating vendors offering everything from desserts to a fixed-price menu are expected.
