Grove City Christian: Eagles to face Bishops looking for third straight win
The Grove City Christian football team will look to ride the momentum from beating its biggest rival when it plays host to Zanesville Rosecrans on Friday, Sept. 18.
The Eagles are looking to avenge a 33-19 loss in 2018 to Rosecrans, which played 8-man football last season because of a lack of players.
“They’ve always been an I-formation team,” coach Hank Patterson said. “I’m sure they’ll probably do the same. When we played them two years ago they were in a pro-I and knocking the crap out of us. That’s what’s in our view right now.”
The Eagles used a late defensive stand to defeat Fairfield Christian 19-18 on Sept. 11 to improve to 2-1 overall and in the MSL-Cardinal Division.
After the Knights scored a touchdown with 11.7 seconds remaining to pull within a point, they went for the victory with a two-point conversion but the pass was broken up.
“They’re growing up in that sense,” Patterson said of his team. “Knowing the moment, being ready for the moment. I really appreciate it.”
Christian Lautenschleger rushed for 277 yards on 31 carries against Fairfield Christian, raising his season total to 557 yards with three touchdowns.
“Christian ran pretty well, just like he’s been doing each week,” Patterson said.
Quarterback Jayden Hanks added a pair of touchdown passes.
The Bishops, who finished 5-3 last season, fell to 0-2 overall and in the league with a 56-6 loss to Berne Union on Sept. 11. Rosecrans has been outscored 96-12.
The Bishops’ 17-player roster features senior Thomas Spohn at quarterback and junior Tommy Bernath at running back. There are nine freshmen on the roster.
Chris Zemba, a 1993 graduate of Rosecrans, is in his first season as coach. He was on the staff during the school’s postseason appearances in 2016 and 2017.
