A pair of football teams battling the injury bug will meet for the first time since 2009 when Upper Arlington visits Olentangy Orange on Friday, Sept. 18, for an OCC-Central Division contest.

Both teams are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, and both have lost key offensive performers the past couple weeks.

The Pioneers were playing without starting running back Luke Applegate in a 28-7 league loss to Dublin Coffman on Sept. 11. The senior rushed for 98 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries in the first two games but might be lost for the season with a leg injury.

“We lost Luke and also lost a couple other players — (wide receiver) Jake Werling and (running back) Bobby Ogles,” Orange coach Zebb Schroeder said. “Jake was kind of a Swiss army knife for us and Bobby had a lot of speed.”

Upper Arlington quarterback Simon Monnin had surgery Sept. 10 to repair a broken collarbone suffered in a 7-6 league win over Hilliard Bradley on Sept. 4. James Hayek stepped in and completed 11 of 18 passes for 139 yards with one touchdown in a 21-14 league loss to Olentangy Liberty on Sept. 11.

Running back Carson Gresock ran for 122 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries, and Hayek had 39 yards rushing on 10 carries. Wide receiver Sam Cannon had eight receptions for 101 yards and one score.

“They play a similar philosophy to us,” Schroeder said. “They want to run the football and get what they can in the passing game. They have a really big running back who is tough to stop.”

Against Coffman, Pioneers quarterback Josh Laisure was 9-for-15 passing for 85 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown to wide receiver Caden Konczak, who caught three passes for 61 yards.

“Orange will come at you and win the line of scrimmage,” UA coach Justin Buttermore said. “You have to match their physicality, and they’re physical on both sides of the ball.”
