Whitehall-Yearling: Rams expect physical matchup with Barons
Whitehall-Yearling football coach Rod Lightfoot believes his team’s game at Buckeye Valley on Friday, Sept. 18, will be decided up front.
The Rams, who are 1-2 overall and in the MSL-Ohio Division, are looking to rebound from a 34-12 loss to visiting Liberty Union on Sept. 11.
Buckeye Valley earned its first win that same night, defeating Bexley 31-26 to improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
“Buckeye Valley has tremendous size and experience up front,” Lightfoot said. “Though we’ve seen improvement week-to-week from our offensive and defensive linemen, our big guys are going to have to elevate their game even more this week. I believe our skilled players match up well against the Barons, but this game will be decided in the trenches.”
Last season, the Rams defeated the Barons 40-30, rallying from a 30-26 deficit after three quarters. It was Buckeye Valley’s first season in the MSL-Ohio.
Key players for Buckeye Valley included quarterback Anthony Hughes and receiver Alex Contreras.
Barons coach Matt Stephens is in his seventh season.
Whitehall quarterback Melvin Scott, who didn’t play because of a concussion in a 22-14 win over Grandview on Sept. 4, returned and completed 11 of 19 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns against Liberty Union.
Liberty Union rushed for 305 yards and held the Rams to 92 on the ground.
Whitehall trailed just 14-12 at halftime, but was outscored 20-0 in the second half.
After finishing 0-10 last year, the Lions are off to a 3-0 start this season.
