In 1948, he was living in Chicago. The parade, which attracted a crowd estimated at 75,000, is shown heading south on High Street in downtown Columbus toward the Ohio Statehouse. Harley also was a two-year starter on the basketball team and a three-year starter for the baseball team. As a favor to track and field coach Frank Castleman, Harley competed in a meet, setting a Big Ten record in the 50-yard dash.
