Pickerington Central coach Jay Sharrett and Pickerington North coach Nate Hillerich will see their teams match up Aug. 30 if football is approved by Gov. Mike DeWine.

If football is approved by Gov. Mike DeWine, one of the marquee games of the first weekend won’t take place on the opening night of the season.

Defending Division I state champion Pickerington Central is set to open at noon Sunday, Aug. 30, against visiting Pickerington North in a game scheduled to be televised on ESPN.

The game is part of an opening weekend that features crossover games in the OCC and numerous other community rivalries, including Dublin Coffman at Dublin Jerome, Hilliard Davidson at Hilliard Darby and Olentangy at Olentangy Orange on Aug. 28.

The North-Central game was expected to be a showcase for Panthers five-star recruit and Ohio State commit Jack Sawyer, but he announced via Twitter on Aug. 14 that he’s opting out of the season to concentrate on the Buckeyes’ potential 2021 spring season.

The Tigers expect to be led by Division I college commits Lorenzo Styles Jr. (Notre Dame), Nick Mosley (Bowling Green) and Garner Wallace (Northwestern).
